Preventing Computer Viruses & Compromised Email Accounts
Think Before You Click
It’s fine to click on links when you’re on trusted websites, however, clicking on links within emails poses a danger of malicious websites or phishing sites which try to get your email credentials and compromise your account.
Fishing is Good–Phishing Isn’t
Phishing is a scam where criminals trick you into going to their website and entering your email address and password. They claim that you need to go their site in order to update your email account. They may even claim you will no longer be able to receive your email. Please be advised that an email giving instructions about your email account will ONLY come from someone from someone in Information Technology at Nebraska Game and Parks Commission or the State of Nebraska’s Office of the Chief Information Officer (OCIO).
Do My Credentials Belong Here?
Use caution before you type your credentials (user name and password) into any pop-up boxes on your computer.
Treat Email Attachments With Caution
Don’t rush to open an email attachment–especially an unsolicited one.
Use Common Sense
When an email arrives and you’re unsure of its legitimacy, feel free to call your NGPC Help Desk.
Watch For Warnings
The OCIO does a good job of filtering out bad emails that threaten our security, however, please continue to be mindful of possible scams. Occasionally, Information Technology will send an email to warn users of potential threats. Information Technology will not bombard users with every threat out there. So, when you do receive an email with a threat from IT, please read it.
Artificial Intelligence
With AI, scammers have more sophisticated tools for drafting emails that sound legitimate. In the past, emails with poor grammar, misuse of punctuation, and misspellings were always a red flag for scam emails. This is not the case any more.
